Last of the Calm

In an Amherst storefront.

A melting snowperson at the UMass library.

The UMass ducks were enjoying a few fading moments of serenity this morning before 20,000 kids hit town like a hurricane this weekend as the students return from winter break.

This is sufficiently odd.

There's something about the popularity of that mutton-headed phrase "It is what it is" that tells me our best is behind us.

I’ve always had a grudging respect for conservative/libertarian commentator William Safire who abhorred the miserable 'new speak' typifed by phrases such as "it is what it is..."
It was also a pet phrase of a guy I worked for at one point who tended to use it when justifying why he wasn’t going to pay me money (that I felt..) he owed me.

I always interpreted the phrase as an admonition to focus on reality, which is good advice in any scene.
