MTA Mystery

The Massachusetts Teacher's Association is holding their Annual Summer Conference at UMass today.

Hmmm, I wonder why the teachers are so paranoid about any outsiders finding out what they say or do at their meetings.

Recently I came across some old photos I have of former Springfield Mayor Charlie Ryan, who died last October. Ryan was unique in Springfield's political history as the only person to serve as mayor in two different centuries - three terms in the 1960's and two terms following the millennium. Here he is after being sworn in as Mayor in 2004.

On his second go-around, Ryan inherited a city on the brink of financial collapse after decades of corruption and fiscal mismanagement. As a result, then Governor Mitt Romney placed Springfield under a state appointed Financial Control Board. Here Ryan and Control Board President Alan LeBovidge are swarmed by the local media following a 2004 Control Board meeting in City Hall.

A beautiful skyscape as seen from the parking lot of the Hamshire Gazette in Northampton yesterday afternoon.
