Storm Front

White stuff on the way.

Snow Storm by Kim Bruce

Wow, a big snowstorm is supposed to come barreling through our Valley today! Of course I will be on hand tomorrow with pictures and video for you of the storm's aftermath.

In the meantime, here's a picture I took last night of the big sign over the doorway to Northampton's Michaelson Gallery advertising the photo display by Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy, better known as Dr. Spock.

A friend of mine was married to someone who worked at that gallery and he met Nimoy on a number of occasions. One time they were attemptng to cross Main Street in order to go to Fitzwilly's. My friend stepped into the street intending to jaywalk across, but Nimoy insisted on  waiting until they got to the crosswalk. "To risk the whole rest of your life simply to save a few seconds crossing the street," Nimoy stated, "would be highly illogical."

I've seen Nimoy's work and he is a first rate photographer from a technical perspective. However I don't like his subject matter, which tends to be fat women. The artistic statement he seems to be trying to make is that all people are beautiful. While that is certainly true regarding at least some aspects of our inner-selves, that is very debatable when it comes to physical appearance. Being too fat is unhealthy, and part of the reason why we celebrate thinness is because we value health. Good art celebrates the beauty of the ideal, and Nimoy's work doesn't do that.

However, some people have complained that I only show male nakedness on this site, so here's one of Nimoy's nudes for all you heteros:

Myself, I'll always be a Leonard Nimoy fan, not for his photography but for Star Trek. Of course I'm still waiting for that forbidden lost episode to be released:
