Avian Harmony

Hey, how are the chickens and ducks doing this winter?

 Let's go check 'em out!

This is their sunhouse, constructed out of hay and an old window. It allows them to hang out outside even on the coldest days.

This is the house where they sleep.

Ducks and chickens look very different. Yet they are both species of bird and live together in perfect harmony despite their differences.

Maybe these ducks and chickens have something to teach us humans.

A not very harmony inspiring sign on an Amherst lawn.

Love on a UMass bulletin board.

Hey, hey! The gang's all here at Figaro Ristaurante in Enfield!

From the right are retired Hampden County Sheriff’s Superintendent Jay Ashe, Michael J. Ashe, the long-time Sheriff of Hampden County (for 42 years), James Dowd of Raymond James Financial Advisors, Atty. Gary Martinelli, Jim Ross, Atty. Bill Fitzgerald, Charlotte, NC hospitality czar Frank Scibelli, and Atty. Anthony J. “Bumpy” Scibelli.

I am the person with that sign on my lawn. Here is why.
Why do the flags go up when the bombs go down,
unless patriotism is a license to kill.
What other purpose is there for our country inundated by a sea of flags, than to justify aggression?
Why is fighting for your country the most heroic and patriotic thing you can do unless patriotism is a license to kill? Why has patriotism been closely associated with war for many centuries?
Why can you tell how aggressive a country is by noticing how many flags are on display?
If America were as peaceful as Switzerland why would we need to fly any more flags than the few they have to mark their borders.
There is only one answer to all three proceeding questions - Patriotism is a license to kill.
Why is the peace movement practically dead despite the enormous amount of harm this company is inflicting around the world?
Could it be that dissent is unpatriotic?
For example, in March of 2003 there was significant opposition to the immminent invasion of Iraq, but as soon as the assault began the protesters stopped protesting! Why? Because being loyal to your country is more important than doing the right thing when you have soldiers in harms way.
In other words, U.S. have a license to kill.
Despite the evidence to the contrary a few well meaning people insist that "peace is patriotic" when they should be criticizing patriotism. Usage determines the meaning of words and it couldn't be more obvious how the concept of patriotism has been used.
Americans also claim that it is patriotic to help the poor address racism, or whatever, but not only is there no need to be patriotic in order to do good deeds, it helps enhance the real, deadly purpose of patriotism.
By the way, you also don't need to be patriotic to defend this country, which hasn't been necessary in case since World War II.
Truly advocating peace requires holding this country and the men who represent it in battle responsible by criticizing the way we fight aggression. Peace activists should consider being called unpatriotic a badge of honor.
We need to first and foremost care about the victim of U.S. aggression whose only crime is to not be one of us, and to have something we want.
