House in the Pines

Mary Carey is a former reporter for the Amherst Bulletin, a former spokesperson for the Office of Northwestern District Attorney, a UMass professor and one of the best known people in Amherst.

Here she is with her daughter Ana.

The daughter is now outshining her mother as the author of the New York Times bestselling mystery novel House in the Pines

I read the book recently and loved it. Of course the novel has a special local appeal as the story is set in Pittsfield, and many scenes occur in places that every Pioneer Valley resident will recognize. The use of time manipulation is masterful in this story, with a level of plot sophistication that is unusual in a first novel. I don't want to spoil any mysteries by telling too much, but the bottom line is this book is a genuine page turner. I can't wait to see what this newest Valley literary superstar will produce next.

Early one morning this week I frantically pulled out my camera to try to capture a heron standing by the banks of the UMass campus pond. Just as I snapped it took flight.

There was an outdoor art show in Amherst last weekend.

Peace signs - back by popular demand.

Advice from downtown Hamp.

Calvin Coolidge, the only resident of the Pioneer Valley to be elected to the Presidency, is shown here at his home in Northampton, pointing to the star on the flag that stands for Massachusetts.

Once upon a time these were the pride of Springfield.
