Downtown

Did you go to the big 4th of July bash in downtown Springfield last month?

I didn't, but I was downtown last week. As usual, I stopped at City Jake's Cafe

They serve the best breakfast in Springfield.

Jake's has been doing a great business for decades, but some of their neighbors have failed to thrive.

Wasn't the casino supposed to revive everything?

Down at Tower Square (forever Baystate West to those of us of a certain age) the long anticipated new Big Y is finally open.

It is drawing steady customers, but hopes that it would revitalize the rest of the mall appear to be unfounded thus far.

The farmer's market across the street in the vacant lot where Steiger's once was is nice as far as it goes, but the truth is it isn't even as big as the farmer's markets in the much smaller localities of Northampton and Amherst.

I was surprised to see little evidence of produce from upper Valley farms such as in Hadley and Leverett. Do those farmers even know the Springfield Farmer's Market exists? Someone needs to do some outreach.

Speaking of Hamp, I love this psychedelic mural newly painted on a King Street pot shop.

A more accurate name for this radio show would be Socialism Now.

The Massachusetts Teacher's Association held their annual meeting at UMass again this year.

As always, the paranoia level was high.

What are they discussing that makes them so afraid of the public finding out?

Spotted the heron again that has been making its home by the UMass campus pond this summer, but this time it was up in a tree! I've never seen a heron in a tree before.

Of course the ducks are still around, as fearless of people as ever.

I wonder how many Pulaski Parks there are in the Valley?

why do towns like Amherst and Noho charge patrons to park but they want free everything else?

Good question.
