North Amherst

Everybody knows downtown Amherst, where events like the Saturday morning market is held on the town common.

However, fewer people are familiar with North Amherst center, where this classic New England church dominates the main intersection.

Across the street is the former North Amherst schoolhouse, later the site of the old Amherst Survival Center and currently used by the town for storage.

Just a little down the street between Montague and Sunderland Roads is the North Amherst Library.

Here is how it looked in 1893.

The building still has a lot of the original old timey period touches, such as this antique decorative glass in the front door.

A bit further down the road is this cement wall.

Closer examination reveals it was erected in 1926.

Looking over the wall you can see the Mill River.

Doesn't it seem like every town in New England has a Mill River? This little used pathway leads to the river's edge.

It allows you to see how the river runs under the road.

Nothing else to do but just sit there a spell and watch the river flow.

Here's three Springfield Mayors (Billy Sullivan, Dom Sarno and Mike Albano) photographed in front of City Hall in 2014 while attending a rally to defeat a referendum that would have repealed the law that authorized casinos in Massachusetts. It failed 60% to 40% and cleared the way for the MGM casino to be constructed downtown.

Dig these old 1950's call letters from the original Pioneer Valley TV stations. Channel 55 soon morphed into TV40.

Who remembers the Boston Phoenix? It was the Beantown version of the Valley Advocate but stopped publishing in 2013.
